In rural areas without piped water, women would often take their washing to the well or stream rather than carry the water home. One way to clean clothes was to put them wet, on a large smooth stone, and hit them with a 'washing bat' to loosen the dirt.

The wooden 'legs' with holes in them are sock stretchers. Woollen socks were pulled over them while wet to stop them shrinking as they dried.
