Introduction. In Sept 1939, Britain declared war on Germany because of its invasion of Poland.

The people in many of Britain's towns and cities were about to experience fear and destruction from a new form of war; bombing from the air.

Coventry, Plymouth, the East End of London and several other cities were almost completely destroyed by German bombs. Most cities were damaged in some way.

The danger in towns was so great that children were evacuated to country areas away from the bombing.

Everyone suffered from shortages of food, clothing and fuel, which all had to be rationed.
