Introduction. In 1837, Princess Victoria became Queen of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Empire. She died in 1901 after a reign of sixty-four years.

During this time, Britain became the richest country in the world and the British Empire grew until it contained a quarter of the World's land and people.

The railway network, the telephone system, electricity in the home, photography, the Post Office, the police force and the theory of evolution are just some of the ideas from the Victorian era.

Not everyone shared in the country's new wealth. There were many successful people with grand houses but there were also dreadful slums and extreme poverty for others.

Evidence of the Victorians is all around us. Their houses, factories, mills, warehouses or churches can be found in most towns.
