Introduction. Writers and film-makers have given us an idea of brave medieval knights in armour, mighty castles, huge banquets and wandering minstrels. In fact, for most ordinary people in the Middle Ages, life was harsh and often dangerous. It was also usually short; reaching the age of thirty was an achievement.
Lack of food, war and disease claimed the lives of many thousands of people. One outbreak of plague in the mid 1300s killed a quarter of all the people in Europe. No wonder this was called ‘The Black Death’.
