Introduction. Around ten thousand years ago, several separate farming communities developed into the powerful city states of Ancient Greece. The two biggest were called Athens and Sparta.
The states sometimes went to war against each other, and at other times, they joined together to fight foreign invaders, such as the Persians.
Many things that we now take for granted were Greek ideas: Trial by jury, the theatre, democracy, the Olympic Games and much of our architecture, are just some.
